This Saturday the Friends of Ravenna Park will be working in the shade, starting at the bridge where the service road crosses the creek and the tributary stream comes in from the north, clearing the bindweed off the plantings and pulling other weeds along the way. The forecast is for hot weather but that part of the ravine stays cool in the morning and should not be too bad with the sun rising later than last month. If it gets too hot we will quit early. About a dozen workers showed up for the continuing effort at the re-landscaping of the Naomi Circle. Sunday was a beautiful, warm summer day and everyone was in good spirits. Some ivy shoots were spotted and quickly dispatched. On the west side of the circle a few of the volunteers went after the sumac runners and there is hope that we will see no more of that plant, here, for now. In the neighborhood this week there will be a works party down at the traffic circle. We will be digging some holes for trees and pulling up sum sumac roots. This will all take place on Sunday, July 25th about 10:30 to noon, or so. It should be nice and probably on the warm side. If you don't want to dig or pull roots, you might bring some lemonade and cookies down to the circle to sustain those who are. All are invited to come help spread the chips that have been delivered. First some weeds and a small amount of ivy need to be removed. Rakes, shovels, pitchforks, wheel barrows and hand tools will be helpful. The sun will be out. If you can't do such work but can provide coffee, cookies, lemonade, etc. credit will be earned just like those in the dirt. Sue, our fearless organizer, has talked to Joshua from the city and determined what trees to acquire and where they should go. That's good. They will be coming in June. Recently about four truckloads of chips were dumped in the circle. Our resident expert, George, has suggested that because of a lot of green stuff in t mix, the piles are heating up and composting. We should leave them in place for a few weeks and let them begin to decompose. We need to keep watch on the piles during this time to stabilize them where they are sliding into the street and walkways....

Many Hands Make Light Work Saturday was a beautiful day and a good day to move dirt. Mark, Sue, Mark , Rajan, Mike, JoElla, Joe, Glenn, and a couple of others I didn't recognize made it to the Naomi traffic circle project to move 2+ yards of black dirt from Patrick and Laura's place to the circle. What might have been a long job for a couple of people was finished in an hour. More importantly, we are finally getting some credits tallied up for the grant a few worked so hard to acquire for this project over the winter....
